"Here, kid," the sergeant said, plunking down a pair of boots on the bench next to Ruslan. "Your boots are more patch than whole; take these."

Ruslan blinked, then as he started pulling off his own boots, "Whose boots were these?"

"Vanya Vladimirovitch. He won't need them."

They'd built a blanket fort, tacking the scratchiest blankets up as the walls, and bedded down in a tangle of the fuzziest--Sascha's doing, almost certainly, Hazel had yet to display massive attractions to certain sorts of textures.

He crouched down at the end closest to where he could hear breathing, and whistled long and low, the beginning of a tune he'd forgotten the words to a long time ago.

"Daaaaaad," Sacha complained from somewhere inside, but Hazel emerged from under an edge, grinning, and came to hug him around the neck and kiss his cheekbone in greeting.

"Oof, baby girl, you're getting big," he said, grinning back as he stood up, propped her on his hip. "They started you on horses yet?"

She shook her head, stuck out one of her legs. "Still too small. Isael can't get the stirrups up high enough, and he says tying me there isn't okay."

He let out a startled half-bark of laughter. "He's right, tying you to the saddle isn't the right way to teach you to ride. I'll see what I can do, baby girl."

She beamed. "Okay."

How old is Sascha? Does Hazel eventually catch her up?

Sascha's ten or twelve years older than Hazel, and yeah, Hazel catches her up. Hazel had a reasonably standard for us growing up stage, while Sascha's got the much more extended version.

"What?" He found himself sat down, feet lifted, and measurements taken by his foot's relation in size to the woman's hand. "What are you--"

"You need boots, my dear," she said, snagging his other foot, "yours are nearly worn through, and there's not time to build you a set, so you'll be borrowing someone's seconds, and boots should fit. Now, what foot dominance are you?"

"Left," he replied automatically, then snapped his mouth shut.

"I'll go hassle Arkady. Don't wander too far--we might need to have you try one a couple of pairs."
