He let it go three days before he called again, this time with one of the card keys.

Found himself wondering if his cousin always answered a summons by dropping a few inches out of empty air, as he took a hasty step back to make room.

"Found one?"

"Found one," Aodh answered cheerily, pulling a pair of cards from his sleeve with a wrist flick and passing them over. "The first brings you to the kitchen, the second to that rock outcropping above the Keep, the one that looks like a face from the wrong angle."

the wrong angle? Isael wondered, but nodded assent. Conall would perch on that outcropping when he wound up running ahead when they went out together, Isael mounted and Conall on four feet.

Come to think of it, he frowned absently down at the card, I think that's the rock Loki tried to peel me off his side on.

He blinked as the light changed, then cursed. Too much attention focused in the direction of the card--he was at the rock.

Aodh popped out of the air on top of the rock, laughing silently, his eyes sliding gold in the afternoon sunlight. "Well, y'know i'works, now. Want to test t'other?"

Isael lifted a corner of his lip at his cousin, which only made his cousin's laughter become audible, and switched cards.

The walls of the apartment his cousin had found him were painted what might have once been described as a soothing shade of blue. Once been, as water on the walls had warped the colour, fading sections and intensifying others, creating almost patterns in the space above the faintly-warped and creaking floorboards.

Aodh had him stand outside the closed door to test the soundproofing, while within his cousin set off static spells and a heavy symphony he'd said was written by a deaf man.

He'd heard a faint, dull thump of a timpani drum from outside, which when he opened the door came washing over him like a wave, accompanied by an enormous sneeze from his cousin as dust flew from the ceiling.

He'd retreated, closing the door behind him, and had gone prowling around, knocking on neighbouring doors before pushing them open to find them empty. The soundproofing seemed as good through the walls as through the door, and the building was nearly if not empty.

He'd decided not to break the locks of the few doors that were closed, so wasn't certain the building was empty. Near enough to--no one was likely to come knocking on his door.

Once he came back in, he found his cousin chasing clumps of neglected dust from the corners of rooms, as the windows vibrated themselves free of their own grime to the tune of the symphony. Miniature whirlwinds played tag across the kitchen counters, and when he opened the icebox, he found it lined in its namesake but clean.

The kitchen table was battered but equally clean, the marks of past cooking knives evident across its wooden surface.

The windows were partially barred in patterns of winter branches, the glass itself as thick as the Keep's small windows, faintly bubbled.

They wouldn't stop him from breaking out, and he nearly said something to the effect as the symphony came to an end and his cousin appeared in the kitchen doorway, hands clamped tightly around something.

"You've never been suicidal," Aodh said before Isael could say anything. "Not even during the wars. I'll not build you a cage y'don' need."

Isael blinked at him, stunned.

A corner of his cousin's mouth quirked upwards in a wry smile, then he opened his hands to reveal the dirt and dust of the apartment, crushed into a palmsized shallow disk. "Call if you need anything," he said in the most formal Court language, his diction perfect, then disappeared, leaving the disk on the floor behind him.
